Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive and fatal cancer associated with exposure to asbestos, but also with a genetic component. The latency period between exposure and clinical presentation can be one to several decades. BAP1 (BRCA1 Associated Protein 1), encoding a nuclear deubiquitinase, is mutated or deleted in multiple cancers, including ∼60% of human mesotheliomas. Survival rates are typically 4–18 months after diagnosis. The current five-year survival rate for the disease is just 10 percent.

35,000 new cases, 30,000 deaths annually worldwide
